This mini crochet car keychain is a small project that is fun to make with basic amigurumi stitches. I made the car with a rounded red body, blue windows, white headlights, and small dark wheels.

I like this project because it uses only a few small pieces, so it is easy to work on without needing a large amount of yarn. You can also change the colors to make different cars or match your favorite colors.

In this free crochet pattern, I’ll show you how to crochet the car body, windows, headlights, and wheels, then sew the pieces together and add the keychain ring.

Project Details

Skill level: Easy

Crochet terms: US terms

Project type: Amigurumi keychain / bag charm

Crochet time: About 1–2 hours

Main techniques: Magic ring, single crochet, increases, decreases, continuous rounds, sewing, and basic assembly

Pieces: 1 car body, 2 windows, 2 headlights, and 4 wheels

Materials

Red cotton yarn for the car body

Light blue cotton yarn for the windows

White cotton yarn for the headlights

Dark brown or black yarn for the wheels

2.0–2.5 mm crochet hook

Polyester fiberfill

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Stitch marker

Keychain ring or small jump ring

Cotton yarn works well for this project because it keeps the small pieces neat and makes the stitches easy to see.

Abbreviations

MR – Magic ring

sc – Single crochet

inc – Increase

dec – Decrease

ch – Chain

sl st – Slip stitch

sts – Stitches

The pattern is written in US crochet terms. Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated, and use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round.

Car Body

Work with red yarn.

R1: 6 sc into a magic ring (6)

R2: Inc around (12)

R3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)

R4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)

R5–R10: Sc around (24)

R11: (2 sc, dec) around (18)

R12: (1 sc, dec) around (12)

Add a small amount of fiberfill and shape the body with your fingers. Do not overstuff it, as the car body should remain rounded rather than becoming too firm.

R13: Dec around (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Using a tapestry needle, weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull gently to close the opening. Secure the yarn and weave in the end.

The finished body should have a compact, rounded shape with enough firmness to support the windows, headlights, wheels, and keychain attachment.

Windows

Make 2 windows with light blue yarn.

For each window:

Ch 7.

Row 1: Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, sc across (6)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc across (6)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc across (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Place one window on each side of the car body. Position them around the upper middle area of the body, leaving enough space below for the wheels.

Before sewing, check both sides from the front and side views to make sure the windows are at a similar height and angle.

Sew each window securely around its edges, taking small stitches so the window stays flat against the body.

Headlights

Make 2 headlights with white yarn.

R1: 6 sc into a magic ring (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Place the two headlights on the front of the car body, with a small even gap between them. Position them at approximately the same height on either side of the center.

Before sewing, check the front view to make sure they are balanced.

Sew each headlight securely around its edge using small stitches. Weave in the yarn ends when finished.

Wheels

Make 4 wheels with dark brown or black yarn.

For each wheel:

R1: 6 sc into a magic ring (6)

R2: (1 sc, inc) around (9)

R3: Sc around (9)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Flatten each wheel gently with your fingers. Do not add stuffing.

Place two wheels on each side of the car body. Position them at the same height and with a similar distance from the front and back of the body.

Before sewing, check the car from the side to make sure all four wheels are positioned evenly.

Sew each wheel securely around its edge using small stitches. Weave in the yarn ends when finished.

Assembly

Before sewing, place all the crocheted pieces on the car body and check their positions.

Sew the two blue windows onto the sides of the car body. Keep them at a similar height and leave enough space below for the wheels.

Sew the two white headlights onto the front of the car. Check that they are evenly spaced and at a similar height.

Sew two wheels onto each side of the car body. Keep the wheels at the same height and check the placement from the side.

Check the position of all pieces before securing the final stitches. Make small adjustments if needed.

Weave in and trim any loose yarn ends.

Attach the keychain ring to the top of the car using the method described in the next section.

Gently shape the car body with your fingers after assembly and check that all crocheted pieces are securely attached.

Attaching the Keychain Ring

Use a separate piece of strong yarn to attach the keychain ring securely to the top of the car body.

Choose a few stitches near the top center of the car body. Pass the yarn through the stitches and through the keychain ring several times.

Sew back through the same stitches a few more times to reinforce the attachment. Keep the ring centered so the car hangs evenly when attached to keys or a bag.

Secure the yarn firmly and weave in the ends inside the car body.

Before using the finished car, gently test the keychain attachment to make sure the ring does not pull away from the crochet.

Helpful Tips

Keep your stitches firm and consistent so the fiberfill does not show through the car body.

Add stuffing gradually and shape the body with your fingers as you work.

Use a stitch marker to make it easier to keep track of continuous rounds.

Place the windows, headlights, and wheels on the body before sewing so you can adjust their positions.

Leave long yarn tails on the crocheted pieces to make sewing easier and more secure.

When attaching the wheels, compare both sides of the car to keep their height and spacing consistent.

Check the keychain ring and all sewn pieces before using the finished car.

Important Notes

Count your stitches at the end of each round to make sure they match the pattern.

Work with consistent tension so the car body keeps its shape.

Stuff the body gradually and avoid overstuffing.

Check the placement of the windows, headlights, and wheels before sewing them permanently.

The finished size may vary depending on the yarn, hook size, and crochet tension.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different yarn color?

Yes. You can choose any color combination for the car body, windows, headlights, and wheels. Using different body colors can also give each car a different look.

Can I make the car larger or smaller?

Yes. Using thicker yarn with a larger hook will make the car larger, while thinner yarn with a smaller hook will make it smaller. Use the same yarn and hook combination for all the pieces so the proportions remain consistent.

Is this pattern suitable for beginners?

Yes. The pattern uses basic stitches such as single crochet, increases, and decreases. The individual pieces are small and the assembly is straightforward, although sewing the small details neatly requires some care.

Can I use the car as a bag charm?

Yes. The finished car can be used as a keychain or bag charm. Make sure the keychain ring is securely attached and check the connection regularly with normal use.

Can I make the car without a keychain ring?

Yes. Simply leave out the keychain ring and use the finished car as a small decorative amigurumi or handmade gift.

Safety Note

This crochet car is designed as a decorative accessory for use as a keychain or bag charm.

The finished piece contains small parts, including the crocheted wheels and metal keychain ring, which may present a choking or swallowing hazard.

Keep the finished car away from babies and young children and do not use it as a toy.

Check the keychain ring and all sewn pieces regularly, especially if the car is used frequently. If any part becomes loose or damaged, repair it before using the car again.

Keep loose yarn, stuffing, and other small components away from children and pets.

This mini amigurumi caterpillar is a small crochet project made with simple stitches and a few different yarn colors. Its small size makes it a fun project for using leftover cotton yarn and turning it into a cute keychain or bag charm.

I designed this caterpillar as a colorful little project that can be made one section at a time. The head and three body segments are crocheted separately and then joined together during assembly.

In this free crochet pattern, I’ll show you how to crochet the head, body segments, and antennae, then put the pieces together and add the finishing details.

Project Details

Skill level: Easy

Crochet terms: US terms

Project type: Amigurumi keychain / bag charm

Finished size: Approximately 10–12 cm long, including the head and three body segments

Crochet time: About 1–2 hours

Main techniques: Magic ring, single crochet, increases, decreases, continuous rounds, stuffing, and sewing

Pieces: 1 head, 3 body segments, and 2 antennae

Materials

Cotton yarn in 4 colors

2.0–2.5 mm crochet hook

4–6 mm safety eyes or black embroidery thread

Polyester fiberfill stuffing

Keyring with chain

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch marker

You can use different color combinations for the head and three body segments. Cotton yarn works well for this small project because it keeps the stitches firm and helps the finished pieces hold their shape. If you prefer embroidered eyes, use black embroidery thread instead of safety eyes.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

MR = magic ring

sc = single crochet

inc = increase

dec = decrease

ch = chain

sl st = slip stitch

st(s) = stitch(es)

FO = fasten off

The stitch count at the end of each round is shown in parentheses.

Pattern Notes

The head and body segments are crocheted separately in continuous rounds.

The head is made in one color. The three body segments can be made in the same color or in different colors.

The stitch count at the end of each round is shown in parentheses.

Use a stitch marker to identify the first stitch of each continuous round.

Stuff the head and body segments gradually as you crochet. Add small amounts of fiberfill at a time and avoid overstuffing, as this can stretch the stitches and change the shape.

The body segments should be similar in size so they line up neatly during assembly.

The finished size may vary depending on the yarn, hook size, and crochet tension.

All pieces are crocheted first and joined during assembly.

Head

Round 7: (1 sc, dec) around. (12)

Add the fiberfill before closing the head. Stuff gradually and shape the piece with your fingers so it remains rounded without becoming too firm.

Round 8: Dec around. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Using a yarn needle, weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull gently to close the opening. Secure the yarn and weave in the end.

Body Segments

Make 3 body segments. You can use a different color for each segment or repeat the same colors.

For each segment:

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)

Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (12)

Round 7: (1 sc, dec) around. (12)

Add a small amount of fiberfill and distribute it evenly. The segment should be rounded and firm enough to hold its shape, but not tightly stuffed.

Round 8: Dec around. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing. Using a yarn needle, weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull gently to close the opening. Secure the yarn without cutting the longer tail needed for assembly.

Repeat the same pattern to make all 3 body segments. Try to keep the tension and amount of stuffing similar so the segments are approximately the same size.

Antennae

Make 2 antennae using the yarn color of your choice.

Chain 5.

Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch in each of the next 4 chains.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Use the yarn tail to sew each antenna securely to the top of the head. Place the two antennae at a similar distance from the center of the head and check their position from the front before securing them.

Keep the antennae flexible rather than pulling the stitches too tightly.

Assembly

Before sewing, arrange the head and three body segments on a flat surface. Check that the segments are aligned and that the color order is the way you want.

Position the first body segment directly behind the head. Sew the two pieces together securely, working through several stitches of both pieces.

Place the second body segment behind the first one. Sew the connecting edges together through several stitches.

Attach the third body segment to the second in the same way. Keep the three segments in a straight line and check that the joins are secure.

Sew the two antennae securely to the top of the head. Check their position from the front so they sit evenly.

Attach the keyring and chain to the top of the head. Sew through several stitches of the head and around the chain attachment point so the connection can withstand normal use. Do not rely on a single stitch.

Weave in any remaining yarn ends and gently shape the head and body segments with your fingers.

Before using the finished caterpillar as a keychain or bag charm, check all sewn connections and make sure the keyring is firmly attached.

Safety Note

This crochet caterpillar keychain contains small parts, including safety eyes and a metal keyring, which may pose a choking or swallowing hazard.

It is intended as a decorative accessory, not as a toy for young children. Keep it away from babies and young children.

If you use embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes, make sure they are stitched securely. Check the body segments, antennae, and keyring attachment regularly, especially if the keychain is used often.

Keep loose yarn, safety eyes, stuffing, and other small components away from children and pets.

Beginner Tips

Count your stitches at the end of each round to make sure they match the pattern.

Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch when working in continuous rounds.

Keep your crochet tension consistent so the head and three body segments stay similar in size.

Add stuffing gradually. Too much stuffing can stretch the stitches and make the pieces lose their round shape.

Before sewing the body segments together, place them next to each other and check that they are evenly aligned.

Pin the pieces in place before sewing if you find it difficult to keep them aligned.

When attaching the antennae and keyring, sew through several stitches and check the connection before using the finished keychain.

If you are making several caterpillars, try different color combinations for the body segments to create different looks.

Using and Caring for Your Caterpillar Keychain

The finished caterpillar can be used as a keychain, backpack charm, or small handmade gift. It is also a simple way to use small amounts of leftover cotton yarn from other projects.

Check the keyring, body connections, and sewn details from time to time, especially if you carry the keychain regularly. If any part becomes loose, repair it before using the keychain again.

Avoid pulling or twisting the antennae and body segments. Gentle handling will help the crochet pieces and sewn details stay in good condition.

Keep the caterpillar away from excessive moisture and store it in a dry place when it is not being used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different colors for the body segments?

Yes. You can use three different colors, repeat the same color, or choose a different combination for each caterpillar. This is also a good project for using small amounts of leftover yarn.

Can I make the caterpillar without safety eyes?

Yes. You can embroider the eyes with black thread instead. This is also a safer option if the finished piece may be around young children. Make sure the embroidered features are securely stitched.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. A different yarn weight will change the finished size. Choose a crochet hook that works with your yarn and keep your stitches firm enough that the stuffing does not show through.

Can I make the caterpillar without a keyring?

Yes. Simply leave out the keyring and use the finished piece as a small decorative amigurumi or handmade gift.

How do I keep the body segments securely attached?

Sew each segment to the next through several stitches rather than attaching them at only one point. Check the alignment as you sew and secure the yarn ends well when finished.

Can I make the caterpillar longer?

Yes. You can make additional body segments using the same 8-round pattern. Keep the segments approximately the same size and make sure each connection is sewn securely.
