If you have some soft chenille yarn in your stash, this cuddly chunky puppy is a fun weekend crochet project. Made with super bulky velvet yarn, this free crochet dog pattern works up quickly and has a wonderfully soft, squishy texture.

With its oversized head, floppy ears, round eyes, little tongue, and seated body, this chunky amigurumi puppy has a sweet cartoon-inspired appearance. The pattern is worked in separate pieces and assembled at the end, giving you plenty of opportunity to adjust the placement of each part and create the expression you like.

This pattern is best suited to intermediate crocheters who are comfortable working in continuous rounds, making increases and decreases, crocheting small flat pieces, stuffing amigurumi, and sewing pieces together.

If you are new to working with plush yarn, you may also want to check out my Crochet Supplies I Use page for the hooks, yarn, and other crochet tools I regularly use for my projects.

Let’s get started!

You do not have to use the exact yarn brands listed. Similar plush yarns such as Himalaya Dolphin Baby, YarnArt Dolce, and Bernat Blanket can also work well.

Tip: Always check your stitch tension when changing yarn brands. A different chenille thickness can noticeably change the size and proportions of the finished puppy.

Before sewing them permanently, place the puppy on a flat surface and adjust the legs until it can sit comfortably.

8. Attach the Tail

Sew the tail to the centre back of the body around Rounds 8–10.

Shape it into a gentle curve.

9. Add the Paw Pads

Sew the small black paw pads onto the feet and front paws.

10. Add the Collar

Wrap the collar around the neck and secure it comfortably.

📏 Tips for Shaping and Stuffing

The final shape of a chenille amigurumi depends heavily on stuffing and tension.

Add fiberfill gradually.

Use firm stuffing in the lower body so the puppy can sit upright.

Avoid overstuffing the head.

Keep the ears soft and floppy.

Leave the upper arms and legs flexible.

Check symmetry before sewing pieces permanently.

Use pins to test the placement first.

When attaching the head, make several secure stitches through both pieces.

If the stuffing becomes visible between your stitches, reduce the amount of stuffing rather than pulling the crochet fabric tighter.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What yarn can I use instead of chunky chenille?

You can substitute another super bulky plush yarn with a similar thickness. Himalaya Dolphin Baby, YarnArt Dolce, and Bernat Blanket are possible alternatives.

Changing the yarn can change the finished size, so always expect some variation.

Can I use safety eyes?

Yes. Safety eyes can be used if appropriate for the intended recipient. For babies and toddlers, embroidered or crocheted eyes are a better choice because detachable plastic components can present a choking hazard.

Why does my puppy look smaller than the pattern?

Your finished size depends on your yarn thickness, hook size, tension, and stuffing. Tighter stitches generally produce a smaller piece, while looser stitches can make the puppy larger.

Why are the ears not stuffed?

Unstuffed ears remain soft and floppy, which gives the puppy a more relaxed and expressive appearance.

Why are the upper arms and legs only lightly stuffed?

Keeping these areas flexible allows the limbs to sit naturally against the body. Overstuffing can make the puppy look stiff and can also make the seated position harder to achieve.

How can I make the puppy sit upright?

Make sure the lower body and feet are adequately stuffed, then test the leg placement on a flat surface before sewing. Small adjustments to the angle of the legs can make a big difference.

Can I sell finished items made from this pattern?

Yes, you can sell finished handmade items that you personally make from this pattern. Please do not copy, redistribute, translate, or republish the written pattern as your own. If you share your finished puppy online, crediting Amyliva Handmade as the pattern designer is appreciated.

💕 Final Thoughts

I hope you enjoy making this chunky velvet puppy. The combination of soft chenille yarn, floppy ears, oversized eyes, and the little tongue gives this amigurumi plenty of personality.

You can experiment with different colours to create your own version. Try cream, brown, white, grey, or even a completely unexpected colour combination.

If you make one, I’d love to see your finished puppy. Feel free to tag Amyliva Handmade when sharing your project online.

Why You’ll Love This Amigurumi Seal Project

This amigurumi seal is a simple and enjoyable project, especially if you like making soft, rounded animals.

Minimal Sewing: The body and head are worked as one main piece, so there is less sewing at the end.

Easy to Gift: A handmade seal can make a cute gift for children, nursery decor, or anyone who enjoys handmade toys.

Good for Practice: The pattern uses basic stitches, increases, and decreases, along with simple facial details.

Easy to Customize: You can try different yarn colors or weights to make a smaller or larger seal.

The Essentials: Tools and Materials

Before you start crocheting, gather the materials below. Using a slightly smaller hook helps keep the stitches tight, which is especially important when working with amigurumi.

1. Yarn Selection

For the classic grey seal shown in this pattern, you can use a sport-weight (4-ply) cotton-acrylic blend or a soft worsted-weight acrylic yarn.

Main Color (MC): Soft grey or light silver, approximately 60–70 grams.

Muzzle Color (CC1): Cream or soft off-white, approximately 10 grams.

Details: A small amount of black embroidery floss or thin yarn for the whiskers, mouth, and nose, plus a little pastel pink for the cheeks.

2. Crochet Hook

Size: 2.5 mm or 3.0 mm.

For amigurumi, a smaller hook than the one recommended on the yarn label usually works best. This helps create tight stitches so the stuffing doesn’t show through.

3. Notions & Tools

Safety Eyes: One pair of 10 mm or 12 mm black safety eyes.

Fiberfill Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill for stuffing the seal.

Stitch Markers: Helpful for keeping track of continuous rounds.

Yarn Needle: A blunt-tipped tapestry needle for sewing the pieces together and weaving in the ends.

Scissors: For cutting the yarn.

Understanding the Stitches & Abbreviations

This pattern uses standard US crochet terms. Before we start, let’s review the abbreviations used throughout the pattern:

MR: Magic Ring (Magic Circle)

ch: Chain stitch

sc: Single crochet

inc: Single crochet increase (two single crochets worked into the same stitch)

dec: Single crochet decrease (invisible decrease recommended)

st(s): Stitch(es)

sl st: Slip stitch

(abc) x N: Repeat the instructions inside the parentheses N times around.

[N]: The total number of stitches you should have at the end of that specific round.

The Power of the Invisible Decrease (dec)

For a neat finish, an invisible decrease works well for this pattern. Here’s how to make one:

Insert your hook into the front loop only of the first stitch.

Immediately insert your hook into the front loop only of the second stitch (you now have three loops on your hook).

Yarn over, and pull through the first two loops.

Yarn over again, and pull through the remaining two loops.
The decrease should blend into the stitches and leave a neat finish.

The Complete Step-by-Step Amigurumi Seal Pattern

Note: This entire project is worked in continuous spiral rounds. Do not join at the end of each round with a slip stitch or chain 1 unless explicitly directed to do so. Simply move your stitch marker up to the last stitch of each round as you progress.

Part 1: The Main Body & Head

Start at the nose and work toward the tail to shape the main body and head.

Round 1: Start with Main Color (Grey) yarn. Make a Magic Ring (MR) and work 6 sc into the ring. [6]
Round 2: Work 1 inc into every stitch around. [12]
Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [18]
Round 4: (2 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [24]
Round 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [30]
Round 6: (4 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [36]
Round 7: (5 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [42]
Round 8: (6 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [48]
Round 9: (7 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [54]
Round 10: (8 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [60]
Rounds 11–22: Work 1 sc in each stitch around (12 structural rounds total for head width). [60]

Placement of Safety Eyes: Insert the 10–12 mm safety eyes between Rounds 14 and 15. Position them evenly on both sides of the face, leaving approximately 11–12 stitches between the eye positions. Check that they are symmetrical before securing the safety-eye backs.

Round 23: (8 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [54]
Round 24: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [54]
Round 25: (7 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [48]
Round 26: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [48]
Round 27: (6 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [42]
Round 28: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [42]
Round 29: (5 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [36]
Round 30: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [36]

Stuffing Time: Begin firmly stuffing the head area. Shape it with your hands as you push the fiberfill inside, making sure the cheeks look nicely rounded and symmetrical around the eyes.

Round 31: (4 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [30]
Rounds 32–36: Work 1 sc in each stitch around (This creates the elongated torso). [30]
Round 37: (3 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [24]
Rounds 38–42: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [24]
Round 43: (2 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [18]
Rounds 44–46: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [18]
Round 47: (1 sc, 1 dec) x 6 times. [12]

Final Stuffing: Fill the rest of the body completely. You want the body to be firm but still retain a slight squish. Do not overstuff the very end of the tail so it can sit flat on a table surface.

Round 48: Work 6 invisible decreases around. [6]
Fasten off your yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail. Thread your tapestry needle through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull tightly to close the opening. Secure the yarn, knot it, and hide the yarn tail deep inside the body.

Part 2: The Soft White Muzzle

The muzzle is worked separately in cream or white yarn and sewn onto the front of the seal.

Round 1: Using Cream/White yarn, start with a Magic Ring and work 6 sc into it. [6]
Round 2: Work 1 inc into every stitch around. [12]
Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [18]
Round 4: (2 sc, 1 inc) x 6 times. [24]
Round 5: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [24]
Fasten off, leaving a generous 12-inch tail for sewing.

Part 3: Front Flippers (Make 2)

The front flippers are crocheted separately and attached to the sides of the body during assembly.

Round 1: Using Main Color (Grey), work 6 sc into a Magic Ring. [6]
Round 2: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 3 times. [9]
Round 3: (2 sc, 1 inc) x 3 times. [12]
Round 4: (3 sc, 1 inc) x 3 times. [15]
Rounds 5–8: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [15]
Round 9: (3 sc, 1 dec) x 3 times. [12]
Round 10: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [12]

Do not stuff the flippers. Press the opening flat so that the stitches line up horizontally, and work single crochets across both layers together to close the gap. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attachment.

Part 4: Tail Fins (Make 2)

The tail fins are crocheted separately and attached to the back of the body during assembly.

Round 1: Using Main Color (Grey), work 5 sc into a Magic Ring. [5]
Round 2: Work 1 inc in each stitch around. [10]
Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 5 times. [15]
Rounds 4–6: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [15]
Round 7: (1 sc, 1 dec) x 5 times. [10]
Round 8: Work 5 decreases around. [5]
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail. You will join the two individual fin tips together at the back base of the main seal body.

Assembly & Bringing the Character to Life

Once all the pieces are crocheted, it’s time to assemble the seal. This is where the muzzle, flippers, and tail are attached and the facial details are added.

Step 1: Attaching the Muzzle

Place the muzzle right in the center of the face, slightly below the center line of the eyes. Pin it securely into place using sewing pins so it doesn’t shift. Before you sew the final few stitches down, slip a small handful of fiberfill stuffing inside the muzzle to give it a 3D pop. Sew all the way around using a whip stitch, then secure and bury the yarn tail.

Step 2: Embroidering the Face

Take a long piece of black embroidery thread or thin yarn and your tapestry needle.

The Nose: Embroider an inverted triangle right in the upper center of the white muzzle. Fill it in with horizontal satin stitches until it looks clean and prominent.

The Smile: Bring the needle down from the bottom point of the nose triangle, then branch it out left and right to create a soft, happy “w” shape smile.

Whiskers: Place three thin black lines on each side of the muzzle, radiating outward to mimic natural seal whiskers.

Eyebrows: Add two small slanted lines right above the safety eyes to give your seal an innocent, endearing look.

Rosy Cheeks: Grab your pastel pink thread and stitch a tiny pink block or circle just beneath the outer corners of each eye.

Step 3: Sewing the Flippers & Tail Fins

Pin the front flippers to the sides of the body around Rounds 32–36, positioning them evenly on both sides. Angle them slightly downward so the seal can rest comfortably without rolling over. Sew them securely in place.

Crochet tulips are a fun way to bring a little spring color into your home. They are simple to make, last much longer than fresh flowers, and can be used on their own or arranged into a handmade bouquet.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to crochet a simple tulip bud, stem, and leaf, then assemble the pieces into a finished flower.

The pattern uses basic crochet techniques such as working in the round, increases, decreases, and simple assembly, so it can also be a good project if you are still learning amigurumi.

Why Crochet Tulips?

Tulips have a simple shape that works especially well for crochet. You can also make them in different colors and arrange several flowers together for a small handmade bouquet.

Creating crochet tulips offers several benefits:

• They never fade or lose their color

• Perfect for home decoration

• Great handmade gifts for friends and family

• Ideal products for craft markets or online shops

• Beginner-friendly crochet project

• Relaxing and mindful crafting activity

Amigurumi tulips are also a fantastic way to practice basic crochet techniques like working in the round, shaping with increases and decreases, and assembling small pieces.

Materials Needed for Crochet Tulips

Before starting your project, gather the following materials. Having your materials ready before you start makes the project easier to follow.

Yarn

Medium-weight yarn works best for tulip flowers. Cotton yarn is highly recommended because it holds its shape well.

Suggested colors:

• Pink

• Red

• Yellow

• White

• Lavender

• Green for stems and leaves

Using pastel colors can create a soft spring bouquet aesthetic.

Crochet Hook

A 2.5 mm or 3.0 mm crochet hook works well for most yarn types used in amigurumi.

Smaller hooks help create tighter stitches, which prevent gaps in the finished flower.

Tapestry Needle

Used for sewing parts together and weaving in yarn ends.

Scissors

Sharp scissors allow precise cutting when finishing pieces.

Floral Wire (Optional)

Floral wire helps stems stay upright and allows gentle shaping.

Stuffing (Optional)

Polyester fiberfill can be used to slightly stuff the tulip bud for a fuller look.

Basic Crochet Techniques Used in This Tutorial

This project uses several common amigurumi techniques. If you are new to crochet, practicing these stitches beforehand will help.

Magic Ring (Magic Circle)

A technique used to start projects worked in the round without leaving a hole in the center.

Single Crochet (sc)

The most common stitch in amigurumi. It creates tight, dense fabric.

Increase (inc)

Two single crochets worked in the same stitch to expand the round.

Decrease (dec)

Combining two stitches together to narrow the shape.

Invisible Decrease

A cleaner version of decrease used in amigurumi for smoother shaping.

Slip Stitch (sl st)

Used to join stitches or move yarn without adding height.

Working in Continuous Rounds

Most amigurumi projects are worked in a spiral rather than joining rounds.

Using a stitch marker is highly recommended to keep track of rounds.

Step 1 – Crochet the Tulip Bud

The tulip bud forms the flower part of the project. This piece is worked in the round.

Instructions

Start with a magic ring.

Crochet 6 single crochets into the ring.

Round 2:

Increase in every stitch (12 stitches).

Round 3:

(sc, inc) repeat around (18 stitches).

Round 4:

(2 sc, inc) repeat around (24 stitches).

Rounds 5–10:

Single crochet in each stitch (24 stitches).

This section creates the tall shape of the tulip bud.

Round 11:

(2 sc, dec) repeat around (18 stitches).

Round 12:

(sc, dec) repeat around (12 stitches).

Round 13:

Decrease around (6 stitches).

Fasten off and leave a long yarn tail for sewing.

Lightly stuff the bud if you prefer a fuller appearance.

Step 2 – Crochet the Tulip Stem

The stem connects the flower to the base and helps the tulip stand upright.

Instructions

Instructions

Chain 6. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a small ring.

Rounds 1–20: Work 1 sc in each of the 6 chain stitches around (6 stitches per round).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching the stem to the tulip bud.

If you want the stem to be flexible yet sturdy, insert a piece of floral wire or a pipe cleaner inside the crocheted tube before attaching the flower.

This will create a long, narrow tube.

If you want the stem to be flexible yet sturdy:

• Insert floral wire

• Or use a pipe cleaner

This allows the tulip to be gently bent or arranged in bouquets.

Step 3 – Crochet the Tulip Leaf

The leaf adds a little extra shape and detail to the finished tulip.

Instructions

Chain 10.

Row 1

Single crochet across (9 stitches).

Row 2

Increase at the beginning and end, sc across (11 stitches).

Row 3

Single crochet across (11 stitches).

Row 4

Decrease at both ends, sc across (9 stitches).

Row 5

Single crochet across (9 stitches).

Fasten off and leave a small tail.

You can gently shape the leaf by:

• Steam blocking

• Adding thin floral wire inside

• Folding slightly along the center line

Step 4 – Assemble the Crochet Tulip

Once all pieces are complete, it’s time to assemble the flower.

Assembly Steps

Sew the open end of the stem securely to the bottom of the tulip bud, making sure the flower is centered and firmly attached.

Attach the leaf to one side of the stem.

Use a tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.

Trim excess yarn carefully.

Shape the flower gently with your fingers.

Optional: A small amount of hot glue can provide extra stability.

Your crochet tulip is now ready.

Styling Your Crochet Tulips

Once your tulips are finished, you can arrange them in different ways depending on where you want to display them.

Bouquet Ideas

• Combine 5–7 tulips in different colors

• Wrap stems with ribbon or lace

• Place them inside a glass jar or ceramic vase

• Add crocheted leaves for fullness

• Wedding tables

• Spring photo shoots

Crochet tulips also photograph beautifully for Pinterest and Instagram content.

Troubleshooting Tips for Perfect Tulips

Even experienced crocheters sometimes encounter small issues. Here are helpful solutions.

Tight Stitches

If the fabric feels stiff or difficult to work into:

• Switch to a slightly larger crochet hook.

Loose Stitches

If gaps appear between stitches:

• Use a smaller hook

• Maintain tighter tension.

Uneven Bud Shape

This usually happens when stitches are miscounted.

Always:

• Count stitches at the end of each round

• Use a stitch marker.

Curling Leaves

Leaves may curl naturally.

To fix this:

• Lightly steam block them

• Add thin floral wire inside.

Advanced Crochet Tulip Variations

Once you master the basic tulip pattern, you can explore creative variations.

Double Layer Tulips

Crochet two buds and attach them together to create fuller petals.

Gradient Tulips

Change yarn colors halfway through the bud to create ombre petals.

Mini Tulips

Use thinner yarn and a 1.5 mm hook to create miniature flowers.

Long Stem Tulips

Extend the stem rounds to create taller bouquet flowers.

These variations are an easy way to change the size and look of your tulips.

Amigurumi crochet projects are one of the most enjoyable ways to transform yarn into adorable handmade creations. Among the many amigurumi designs, cute little monsters are especially popular because they allow you to use bright colors, playful shapes, and creative expressions.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to crochet a cute little monster using simple amigurumi techniques. The project includes a rounded body, small arms, playful eyes, and optional decorative details that you can customize with your favorite colors.

The pattern uses basic stitches such as single crochet, increases, and decreases, making it a fun project for crocheters who are comfortable with basic amigurumi techniques.

These tiny crochet monsters make perfect gifts, nursery decorations, desk toys, or handmade collectibles. The techniques used in this project will also help you improve your amigurumi skills and understand how shaping works in crochet.

Materials Needed for Amigurumi Monsters

Before starting your crochet project, it is important to prepare the right tools and materials. Using the correct yarn weight and hook size will help your amigurumi toy keep its shape and look neat.

Yarn

Choose cotton yarn or cotton blend yarn for best results. Cotton yarn creates a firm structure which is ideal for amigurumi.

Recommended yarn types:

Cotton yarn (DK or worsted weight)

Acrylic yarn (soft plush look)

Cotton-acrylic blend

Using different colors will make your monsters more playful and unique.

Crochet Hook

For amigurumi projects, the hook size should be slightly smaller than the yarn recommendation to create tight stitches.

Recommended size:

2.25 mm – 3 mm crochet hook

Tight stitches prevent the stuffing from showing through the fabric.

Other Materials

You will also need:

10 mm safety eyes

Polyester fiberfill stuffing

Yarn needle for sewing parts

Stitch marker

Scissors

A stitch marker is very helpful because amigurumi is typically worked in continuous spiral rounds.

Understanding the Basic Amigurumi Techniques

Before beginning the pattern, it is important to understand a few fundamental crochet techniques used in almost every amigurumi project.

Magic Ring (MR)

The magic ring technique allows you to start crocheting in a closed circle. It creates a tight center with no visible hole.

Steps:

Wrap yarn around your fingers to form a loop.

Insert the hook into the loop.

Pull up a loop and chain one.

Crochet the required number of stitches into the ring.

Pull the yarn tail to close the circle.

The magic ring is the most commonly used method for starting amigurumi pieces.

Single Crochet (sc)

Single crochet is the primary stitch used in amigurumi.

Steps:

Insert hook into the stitch.

Yarn over and pull up a loop.

Yarn over again and pull through both loops.

Using tight single crochet stitches ensures a clean and professional amigurumi finish.

Increase (inc)

An increase means working two single crochets into the same stitch.

This technique allows the crochet piece to expand and create rounded shapes such as the body or head.

Decrease (dec)

A decrease reduces stitches and helps shape the toy.

The preferred method in amigurumi is the invisible decrease because it creates smoother results.

Steps:

Insert hook into the front loop of the first stitch.

Insert hook into the front loop of the next stitch.

Yarn over and pull through both loops.

Yarn over and pull through remaining loops.

This technique prevents gaps in the crochet fabric.

How to Crochet the Monster Legs and Body

The legs and body of the monster are crocheted as one continuous piece. This technique creates a seamless look and improves durability.

Step 1 – First Leg

Start with a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR

Round 2: inc in each stitch (12)

Round 3: 12 sc

Finish the first leg and fasten off.

Step 2 – Second Leg

Repeat the same steps for the second leg.

After completing round 3 of the second leg, do not fasten off. Instead, continue working to join both legs.

Step 3 – Joining the Legs

After finishing the second leg, do not fasten off.

Chain 2 to create the bridge between the two legs. Continue crocheting around the second leg, work across the chain stitches, and then continue around the first leg to join both pieces into one continuous round.

At the end of the joining round, you should have 26 stitches: 12 stitches from the first leg, 2 chain-space stitches, and 12 stitches from the second leg.

Continue working in continuous rounds to form the body.

Step 4 – Shaping the Body

Continue working in continuous rounds from the 26 stitches of the leg-joining round.

Round 5: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [26]

Round 6: (12 sc, 1 inc) × 2. [28]

Round 7: (13 sc, 1 inc) × 2. [30]

Round 8: (4 sc, 1 inc) × 6. [36]

Rounds 9–12: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [36]

Begin stuffing the body gradually. Add small amounts of fiberfill as you work, keeping the shape rounded without overstuffing.

Round 13: (4 sc, 1 dec) × 6. [30]

Round 14: (3 sc, 1 dec) × 6. [24]

Round 15: (2 sc, 1 dec) × 6. [18]

Round 16: (1 sc, 1 dec) × 6. [12]

Add any remaining stuffing and shape the body gently with your fingers.

Round 17: Work 6 dec around. [6]

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread the yarn needle through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches and pull to close the opening. Secure the yarn and hide the tail inside the body.

Creating the Monster Eyes

Large cartoon-style eyes are what give these monsters their adorable personality.

Eye Base

Round 1: MR with 6 sc

Round 2: 6 inc (12)

Round 3–4: 12 sc

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Attaching Safety Eyes

Insert the 10 mm safety eyes through the crochet fabric before attaching the backing.

Position the eyes symmetrically and sew the white eye pieces around them.

Place the eyes evenly on the upper front of the body, around Rounds 7–9. Check their position from the front before securing the backs.

Crocheting the Monster Arms

Make 2 arms.

Round 1: Make a Magic Ring and work 6 sc into the ring. [6]

Round 2: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. [6]

By Amyliva Handmade

Crochet mimosa flowers are a lovely way to bring a little spring into your home. Their small yellow flowers and delicate green leaves make them especially pretty when arranged into a handmade bouquet.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make simple crochet mimosa flowers, stems, and leaves, then put everything together to create a small bouquet.

This project uses basic crochet stitches and a popcorn stitch to create the small, rounded flowers. You can use different shades of yellow and green to give your bouquet a more natural look.

A Little About Mimosa Flowers

Mimosa is known for its small, bright yellow flowers and soft green foliage. In Italy and Türkiye, mimosa is also closely associated with International Women’s Day on March 8.

Its cheerful yellow color makes it a popular choice for spring decorations and handmade floral arrangements.

Choosing Yarn for Crochet Mimosa

The texture of your mimosa depends heavily on your choice of materials. Unlike amigurumi animals which require a very tight tension, floral crochet allows for a bit more “breath” in the stitches.

1. Fiber Selection

• Mercerized Cotton: This is my top recommendation. The slight sheen mimics the way sunlight hits real flower pollen and provides excellent stitch definition.

• Brushed Acrylic or Mohair Blends: If you want a “fuzzy” or “dreamy” look, using a thin mohair strand creates a soft halo effect that mimics the powdery texture of real mimosa blooms.

2. The Color Palette

Consider using nature-inspired tones:

• Lemon Chiffon: For younger, budding flowers.

• Mustard or Goldenrod: For a vintage, dried-flower aesthetic.

• Sage or Dusty Green: For the leaves, to keep the overall look “earthy.”

🛠 Materials & Tools

Item Description
Yellow yarn Cotton or acrylic, DK weight
Green yarn For stems and leaves
Crochet hook Size 2.5mm–3.5mm (adjust to yarn)
Yarn needle For sewing pieces together
Scissors Small and sharp
Optional: Floral wire or ribbon For bouquet shaping

Step-by-Step Instructions

Phase 1: Mastering the Popcorn Stitch (The Golden Blooms)

The “Popcorn Stitch” is the heart of this project. It creates a 3D effect that looks like a tiny, fluffy sphere.

1. Magic Ring: Start with a magic ring to ensure no hole at the bottom.

2. Foundation: Chain 2, then work 4 dc into the magic ring. The chain 2 counts as the first dc, giving you 5 dc in total.

3. Form the Popcorn: Pull the working loop slightly larger and remove your hook.

4. Join the Popcorn: Insert your hook from front to back through the top of the first actual dc stitch. Pick up the working loop and pull it through the stitch.

5. Secure: Chain 1 to secure the popcorn stitch

Repeat these steps to make 12 small yellow flowers for a small bouquet. You can make more flowers if you want a fuller arrangement.

Phase 2: The Green Architecture (Stems & Branches)

1. Main Stem: Chain 45. Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch in each chain across to create the main stem.

2. Sub-Branches: At selected points along the stem, chain 10 and work slip stitches back along the chain to return to the main stem. Repeat this 3 times, spacing the branches at different heights. These three branches can be used to attach three of the flower clusters, while the remaining cluster can be attached near the top of the main stem.

3. Reinforcement: If you want a sturdier stem, place floral wire alongside the crocheted stem and wrap or crochet the green yarn around it to keep the wire covered.

Phase 3: The Fern-Like Foliage

1. Base: Chain 22.

2. Leaflets: Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch into the next 2 chains. Chain 3, then slip stitch into the first chain of the 3-chain loop to form a small pointed leaflet. Slip stitch into the next 2 chains of the foundation chain.

Repeat this sequence along one side of the foundation chain.

3. Second Side: Continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain, working the same leaflet sequence into the remaining chain loops. This creates small leaflets along both sides of the center chain.

Repeat the leaf pattern to make 4 leaves for the bouquet. You can make additional leaves if you prefer a fuller arrangement.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching the leaf to the stem.

Assembly: Bringing the Bouquet to Life

Once you have made the flowers, stems, and leaves, you can start putting the bouquet together.

1. Create the Flower Clusters: Gather 3 small yellow flowers and group them together at slightly different heights.

2. Attach the Flowers: Use green yarn to secure three flower clusters to the smaller branches of the main stem. Attach the remaining cluster near the top of the main stem. Wrap the yarn neatly around each join to keep the flowers in place.

3. Add the Leaves: Attach the crocheted leaves along the stem, placing them at different heights and angles for a natural-looking arrangement.

4. Shape the Bouquet: Gently bend and arrange the stems and branches until you are happy with the shape. If you added floral wire, adjust it carefully to give the bouquet the desired position.

💡 Beyond the Bouquet: Creative Variations

• Mimosa Wreath: Attach branches to a gold hoop.

• Brooches: A single cluster makes a stunning accessory for a linen blazer.

• Gift Toppers: Use a crochet stem instead of a plastic bow.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this project beginner-friendly?
Yes. The popcorn stitch may look a little tricky at first, but once you learn the steps, it is quite simple. The flowers are small and repetitive, which makes this project easy to work on at your own pace.

Q: Can I use other yarn types?
Absolutely. Cotton yarn gives crisp texture, while acrylic adds softness. Just adjust your hook size accordingly.

Q: How long does it take to complete?
It depends on how many flowers and stems you make. A small bouquet may take around 2–3 hours, while a larger arrangement will take longer.

Q: Can I sell finished bouquets made from this pattern?
Yes, you can sell finished crochet bouquets you make from this pattern. Please do not resell, copy, or redistribute the written pattern itself.

Q: How do I care for crocheted flowers?
Keep the finished flowers away from excessive moisture and dust. If the leaves lose their shape or curl, gently reshape them by hand. Avoid using high heat, especially if you used acrylic yarn or floral wire.

Final Thoughts

Crochet mimosa flowers are a simple way to bring a little spring color into your home. Once you have made a few flowers, you can experiment with different stem lengths, flower groupings, and leaf placements to create your own bouquet.

This project is also a nice way to use up small amounts of yellow and green yarn. You can make a single stem or combine several stems for a fuller arrangement.

I hope you enjoy making these little mimosa flowers and creating your own handmade bouquet.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced crocheter, this project is a fun way to practice simple amigurumi techniques and create a sweet handmade decoration or gift.

Why Duck Amigurumi Is Such a Fun Crochet Project

Duck amigurumi toys are timeless. Their soft shapes and friendly look make them ideal for:

Baby shower gifts

Nursery decor

Handmade plush collections

Thoughtful, personalized presents

This cute duck amigurumi stands out because it uses simple stitches, minimal color changes, and a clean, modern design.
It is also highly customizable, allowing you to adjust size, colors, and accessories easily.

Materials Needed for Duck Amigurumi

Before starting your crochet project, gather the following materials:

Yarn:

Main color: White or cream (DK or sport weight)

Beak and feet: Yellow or orange

Crochet hook: 2.5 mm – 3.0 mm (depending on your tension)

Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill

Safety eyes: 6–8 mm (or embroidered eyes for baby-safe option)

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch marker

Optional: ribbon or bow for decoration

💡 Tip from AmyLiva Handmade:

Always use a slightly smaller hook than recommended for your yarn to achieve tight stitches and avoid gaps.

Crochet Abbreviations (US Terms)

This pattern uses standard US crochet terminology:

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

inc – increase (2 sc in one stitch)

dec – decrease (single crochet two stitches together)

sl st – slip stitch

MR – magic ring

( ) – repeat sequence

[ ] – total stitch count

Crochet Techniques Used in This Pattern

Understanding the techniques used will make the process smoother:

Magic Ring (MR)

The magic ring technique creates a tightly closed center, perfect for amigurumi heads and bodies.

Single Crochet (sc)

The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, creating a dense and smooth texture.

Invisible Decrease

This technique helps maintain a neat look while shaping the duck’s body.

Working in Continuous Rounds

Do not join rounds unless stated. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds.

Duck Amigurumi Body Construction

The body and head are crocheted as one piece, creating a seamless and professional finish.

Body Construction

Start with a foundation chain and work back along the chain to form the base.

Gradually increase stitches to shape the belly.

Work several even rounds to build height.

Slowly decrease to shape the upper body and neck.

💡 Shaping Tip:

Stuff the body firmly but gently as you go. Overstuffing may distort the shape, while understuffing can make it floppy.

Wings (Make 2)

The wings are small and simple, designed to sit naturally on the sides of the body.

Begin with a magic ring.

Increase slightly to create a rounded shape.

Work several even rounds.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

When attaching the wings:

Place them slightly angled downward.

Sew securely using small, even stitches.

Legs and Feet (Make 2)

The legs add balance and character to your duck amigurumi.

Start with chains to create the base of the feet.

Work back along the chain to form a flat shape.

Continue with single crochet rounds to create a short leg.

Attach the legs evenly at the bottom of the body so the duck can stand upright.

Beak (Mouth Piece)

The beak is what gives the duck its adorable expression.

Use yellow or orange yarn.

Crochet a small oval shape.

Lightly stuff if desired for dimension.

Sew the beak between the eyes, slightly below center.

Facial Details and Expression

You can customize the face depending on the intended use:

Safety eyes: Best for decorative or collector items

Embroidered eyes: Recommended for baby-safe toys

Add light blush with embroidery or fabric chalk for a soft, sweet look.

Assembly Tips for a Professional Finish

Pin all parts before sewing to ensure symmetry.

Use the same yarn color for invisible seams.

Secure all ends tightly and hide them inside the body.

Take your time during assembly—this step defines the final look.

Customization Ideas

One of the best parts of this cute duck amigurumi is how easy it is to customize:

Change yarn colors for pastel or bold styles

Add a tiny hat, scarf, or bow

Adjust hook size to make a keychain or plush version

This makes the pattern perfect for selling finished products or creating unique gifts.

Care Instructions

To keep your duck amigurumi looking its best:

Spot clean with a damp cloth

Do not machine wash

Keep away from high heat

Store in a dry place

Safety Disclaimer

For younger children, embroider the eyes and make sure all sewn details are securely attached. Always supervise young children when they are using handmade toys.

If you love woodland animals and cute handmade projects, this little Hedgehog Amigurumi is a fun pattern to try. With its rounded body, pointed snout, tiny ears, textured back, and a sweet leaf detail, this crochet hedgehog has plenty of personality.

This project is designed for crocheters who are comfortable with basic amigurumi techniques such as working in continuous rounds, making increases and decreases, stuffing small pieces, and sewing crocheted parts together.

In this tutorial, you’ll make the body and head, legs, arms, ears, facial details, a small leaf, and the textured spiky back before assembling everything into the finished hedgehog.

You can also customize your hedgehog with different yarn colors, embroidered details, or a different size by changing the yarn and hook.

Let’s get started! 🧶🦔

Why Hedgehog Amigurumi Toys Are So Loved

Hedgehogs symbolize protection, curiosity, and warmth. In amigurumi form, their rounded shapes and textured backs translate perfectly into crochet stitches. This makes them ideal subjects for handmade toys and decorative items.

Crochet hedgehog toys are especially popular because:

They look cute from every angle

They work well in small sizes

They are perfect for seasonal and woodland-themed collections

They photograph beautifully for Pinterest and blog content

This pattern focuses on simplicity while still offering enough texture and detail to create a visually rich finished piece.

Skill Level and Finished Size

This hedgehog amigurumi pattern is suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate crocheters.

Skill level: Beginner–Intermediate

Finished size: Approximately 10–12 cm (size may vary depending on yarn and hook)

Construction: Separate parts sewn together

Style: Soft, textured, and cute

Basic crochet knowledge such as working in the round, increasing, decreasing, and sewing pieces together is recommended.

Materials and Tools

To create this crochet hedgehog, you will need the following materials:

Yarn (DK or sport weight recommended)

Light beige or cream for the body and head

Brown for the hedgehog spikes

Green for the leaf

Crochet hook: 2.0 mm – 2.5 mm

Fiberfill stuffing

Yarn needle

Scissors

Black yarn or embroidery thread for the nose

Optional: safety eyes or embroidered eyes

Using cotton yarn will give a clean stitch definition, while acrylic yarn will result in a softer finish.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern uses basic crochet stitches, with a simple chain technique to create the textured back.

Techniques included:

Magic ring

Single crochet

Increasing and decreasing

Working in continuous rounds

Chain stitch for texture

Sewing crochet pieces together

The hedgehog spikes are created separately using chain stitches and sewn onto the body, which gives the toy its distinctive look without complicated stitch work.

Pattern Structure Overview

The crochet hedgehog is made up of the following parts:

Body

Head

Legs

Arms

Ears

Eyes

Mouth

Leaf detail

Spiky back

Each piece is crocheted individually and assembled at the final stage. This construction method allows better control over shaping and makes the pattern easier to follow.

Part 1: Body and Head

Sew each arm securely to the body using the yarn tails.

Weave in and hide the remaining ends inside the body.

Part 4: Ears

Make 2 using light beige or cream yarn.

R1: MR, 6 sc. (6 sts)

R2: (1 sc, inc) × 3. (9 sts)

R3: Sc in each stitch around. (9 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Fold each ear gently in half to create a slightly curved shape.

Attaching the Ears

Position the ears on both sides of the head, slightly above the widest part of the head.

Pin them in place first and check that they are symmetrical.

Sew each ear securely to the head using the yarn tails.

Weave in and hide the remaining ends inside the head.

Part 5: Eyes

The eyes can be made with small safety eyes or embroidered with black yarn.

Safety Eyes

If using safety eyes, position them on the front of the head, slightly above the widest part of the snout.

Check the placement from the front and side before securing the backs.

Make sure the eyes are positioned evenly on both sides of the face.

Embroidered Eyes

For an embroidered version, use black embroidery thread or a small amount of black yarn.

Make a few small stitches to create each eye.

Keep the eyes small and evenly spaced for a simple, friendly expression.

Secure the yarn at the back of the head and weave in the ends.

Safety Note: Safety eyes are not recommended for babies or young children because they can become a choking hazard if detached. Use embroidered eyes instead for baby-safe versions.

Part 6: Mouth & Nose

Use black yarn or embroidery thread.

Nose

Thread a tapestry needle with black yarn.

Position the nose at the pointed end of the hedgehog’s snout.

Make several small stitches in the same area to create a small, rounded triangular nose.

Secure the yarn at the back of the head and weave in the remaining end.

Mouth

Using the same black yarn, embroider a small curved line directly below the nose.

Keep the stitches small and even to create a simple, friendly expression.

Secure and hide the yarn ends inside the head.

💡 Tip: Before embroidering the nose and mouth permanently, mark their positions with pins or a small removable stitch. This makes it easier to adjust the expression.

Part 7: Leaf Detail

Using green yarn, crochet a small leaf to place on top of the hedgehog’s head.

R1: Ch 6.

Starting in the second chain from the hook:

1 sl st, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc.

Continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain:

1 sc, 1 sl st.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Attaching the Leaf

Place the leaf on top of the hedgehog’s head, slightly to one side.

Use the yarn tail and a tapestry needle to sew the center of the leaf securely to the head.

You can gently shape the leaf with your fingers to give it a natural curved appearance.

Weave in and hide the remaining yarn end inside the head.

💡 Tip: You can make the leaf slightly larger or smaller by changing the length of the starting chain.

Part 8: Spiky Back

Using brown yarn, create the hedgehog’s textured back with a simple chain-based technique.

Making the Spiky Strip

Work one long foundation chain with brown yarn. The length will depend on the size of your hedgehog and the area you want to cover.

For each spike:

Chain 4.

Slip stitch back into the same base point to form a small pointed loop.

Move to the next point along the foundation chain.

Repeat the process to create a row of small spikes.

Continue until you have enough spikes to cover the back of the body.

Attaching the Spiky Strip

Place the finished spiky strip along the back of the hedgehog, starting near the lower back and continuing upward toward the top of the body.

Use a tapestry needle and brown yarn to sew the strip securely to the body.

Keep the spikes concentrated on the back half of the hedgehog and leave the cream-colored head and underside free of spikes.

After sewing, gently separate the spikes with your fingers so they spread naturally across the back.

💡 Tip: Make the chain slightly longer if you want a fuller spiky back, or shorter for a simpler look. Before sewing, place the strip against the body to check the length and position.

Assembly

Once all the crocheted pieces are finished, it is time to bring your hedgehog together.

1. Attach the Head

Position the head slightly forward on the body, as described in the Body and Head section.

Pin it in place first and check the shape from the front and side.

Sew the head securely to the body with small, even stitches.

2. Attach the Legs

Position the four legs evenly underneath the body.

Place two legs toward the front and two toward the back so the hedgehog can sit securely.

Sew each leg firmly to the body and weave in the yarn ends.

3. Attach the Arms

Position the two arms on the sides of the body, slightly below the head.

Sew them securely and hide the yarn ends inside the body.

4. Attach the Ears

Sew the two ears to the sides of the head.

Check their position from the front before securing them permanently.

5. Add the Eyes, Nose, and Mouth

Attach the safety eyes or embroider the eyes first.

Then embroider the nose at the tip of the snout and add the small curved mouth underneath.

6. Attach the Leaf

Place the green leaf slightly to one side on top of the head.

Sew it securely and gently shape it with your fingers.

7. Attach the Spiky Back

Place the brown spiky strip over the back of the body.

Adjust the position so the spikes cover the back without extending onto the face or underside.

Sew the strip securely and arrange the spikes with your fingers.

Final Check

Check all sewn pieces carefully and make sure there are no loose yarn ends.

Give the finished hedgehog a gentle squeeze to make sure the stuffing is evenly distributed and all attached pieces are secure.

Your cute hedgehog amigurumi is now complete! 🦔💚

Assembly Tips for Best Results

Take your time when positioning and sewing each piece. Checking the placement before sewing permanently will help you achieve a balanced and polished finished hedgehog.

Make sure all pieces are securely attached and all yarn ends are woven in and hidden.
